Nosvra began with a simple idea: create a place in the hills where guests can experience Nepal at a slower pace.
The land belonged to the family of one of our founders, terraced and farmed for three generations before the first rooms were built in 2017. We kept the terracing, kept most of the trees, and built into the slope rather than levelling it — which made construction slower and more expensive, and is the reason the property sits the way it does now.
There are eleven rooms. We have been asked more than once why we did not build twenty, and the honest answer is that eleven is the number our team can look after properly. A resort where the person carrying your bag also remembers your name is a different kind of stay from one where it does not.
Almost everyone who works here lives within a few kilometres. That is not a sustainability line for a website — it is simply how a property in a place like this should be staffed, and it is why our team can tell you which trail is muddy this week and which family in the village below makes the best juju dhau.
How we host
Four things we try to get right
Present, not hovering
Our team is around when you need something and out of the way when you do not. Nobody will interrupt you on the terrace to ask how everything is.
Honest about the weather
From June to September you may see no mountains at all. We say so when you book rather than after you arrive, and we tell you what the hills are like in cloud, which is its own thing.
Local before imported
Vegetables from the valley, staff from the villages around us, guides who grew up on these trails. Where something has to come from Kathmandu or further, we do not pretend otherwise.
A small property, kept small
Eleven rooms, one restaurant, one team. We would rather be fully booked and well run than large and stretched.
The people here
Fourteen of us, across reception, housekeeping, the kitchen and the garden. Most have been here more than three years, which in this industry is unusual and is something we work at.
If you want a guide for a walk, it will be someone who grew up on that trail rather than an agency booking. If you ask what to eat in Bhaktapur, you will get an opinion rather than a brochure.
